Shelves filled to the brim with metallic cans lined the aisles of the quaint grocery store that Atsushi Miura was enslaved at six out of seven days of the week. He absolutely hated his job; he stood at a cash register waiting on customers for what seemed like forever while trying to find the time to fill produce and price groceries. Mistakes were being made left and right on the register, and he wanted to pick up the piece of junk and throw it out the window. He worked for almost eight hours a day without a break and he was nearly always ready for bed by the time he headed home, which was approximately twenty minutes away by bike. He was miserable and the mean customers didn’t make his mood any better. Why couldn’t they just make his life easier and stop whining about prices to him?

Atsushi was an eighteen year old high school student who took up a job so he could afford to live with his parents. They weren’t well off to begin with and they told him if he wanted to live at home he’d have to pay “rent” for his room. His own room! The very same room he lived in for all of his life.

The boy didn’t have the best relationship with his parents. He wanted to rebel like all of his other friends, but the farthest he ever went was bleach his hair and get his ears pierced. He didn’t have any special interests or anything he was really good at, so the small family-owned store was the only place he could look for work, and the only reason he even had the job in the first place was because of his best friend, Seiji Arakawa.

“Seiji-kuuuuuuuuuuun! I need help!” Atsushi whined as he made yet another mistake on the truly evil cash register while waiting on a line of seven customers. He was about ready to blow; every time he made a big mistake like this he’d always have a huge line of customers, and he could see their emotions on their face. ‘Why does he even work here?’ ‘What’s so hard about ringing up our groceries?’ It’s like he could hear them speak their thoughts. He rubbed at his throbbing temples as he waited for his savior, Seiji.

“Calm down Miura-kun. I’ll show you how to fix this one more time, and then you’ll have to do this on your own.” Seiji’s fingers flew on the keypad as he erased the problem entirely. ‘Pft. Yeah, right.’ Atsushi thought to himself as he didn’t pay any attention to his best friend. He knew Seiji would bail him out every time; he never failed him. “…There. Now you’re all set. Here, I’ll jump on the second register for you.” He looked at the waiting customers and cleared his throat. “I apologize for the inconvenience, but if anyone would like to move to my line I’d be happy to help!”

The impatient ones immediately left Atsushi’s line and headed for the next one. He sighed, “Thanks, Seiji-kun.”

“No problem.” The blonde said truthfully. Seiji and Atsushi knew each other since the beginning of middle school. Seiji was looked down upon by the other classmates because his hair was naturally blonde. He was only half Japanese; his mother was English. He even lived in London before moving to Japan when he was on his way to the second grade. Seiji felt bad for the kid, and they became fast friends in no time. He wanted to stand up for the quiet Seiji, but he soon found out he didn’t need to. One day Atsushi was being bullied by upper classmen when Seiji came out of nowhere, and attacked the older boys.  They had never been separated since.

As soon as his line ended, Seiji tapped his friend’s shoulder. “Hey, why don’t you let me take the register for a bit.” The blonde smiled and easily stepped in-between his friend and the register, ringing the orders fluidly. “You can start bringing out the produce. I know you can handle that.” Atsushi nodded sluggishly as he gave the register a dirty look, and left his best friend’s side, sighing in defeat.

As he made his way to the back room where the freezer was, he glanced at the clock hanging on the wall. He took a few seconds to read it and suddenly he realized Seiji would be leaving soon.

Great.

The now deeply depressed Atsushi hung his head as he made his way to the freezer, wishing hopelessly that his savior wouldn’t leave him to tend the cash register alone.

An hour dragged by slowly and Atsushi moved like a snail. He was lucky the manager was preoccupied with something else to notice the miserable soul wandering the store. The time had come for him to take over Seiji’s place. He finished putting out the produce he carried from the cold freezer, and met Seiji by the machinery.

The blonde gave his friend an odd glance. “It’s that time already?” Seiji smiled. “The day’s gone by fast, hasn’t it?”

“Umm, yeah.” Atsushi spoke slowly with a hint of disappointment.

In almost no time, Seiji was ready to leave. He grabbed his best friend’s shoulders. “You’ll be okay, Miura-kun. I have faith in you.” He gave another bright smile and walked out the front door with an extra spring in his step.

With a tear in his eye, the lonely boy sadly shifted his attention to his customers, waiting for their unmerciful wrath.
--
Two hours passed, and one problem lead to yet another as Atsushi struggled to make it through the day.

“No, you’ve given me the wrong change.” One woman pointed out as she thrusted the receipt in his forlorn face.

“I’m very sorry, ma’am.” He tapped the ‘no sale’ button on the register and the drawer opened with ease, hitting him in the stomach. He grunted, but grabbed the money needed to fix the problem, and placed it in her hand as he shut the drawer quickly. One second later he was bombarded with two more receipts.

“You had me pay more than I was supposed to!”

“Why is there a tax on this item?”

Atsushi took a deep breath and looked at the next person in line, bowing slightly. “I’m very sorry, but I need to fix these problems. It should only take a few minutes.” He spoke quickly.

“There’s no rush. Take your time.” The customer said smoothly. Atsushi looked upat the person again. It was a very well-dressed man who stood elegantly before him with a kind smile on his face. He had medium length raven hair that seemed to shine. His eyes were hidden behind designer sunglasses. His pin-stripped suit declared that he was indeed a rich somebody.  He couldn’t help but stare at the stranger, but he was brought back to reality by sensing the angry stabbing of the other two customers’ stares at the back of is head. Swiftly, he turned around and bowed to them as well.

It took him a couple minutes to fix the problem, and he even had to call over the manager to help him. Atsushi stood there, cheeks red from embarrassment, hoping the two patrons would leave so he could focus his attention on the mysterious guy.

“Miura-kun, you really have to pay attention to what you’re doing!” The manager’s very rough male looks gave the boy an even scarier vibe as he was lectured on his actions. He bowed his head slightly to show his apologies, but his eyes looked up at the mysterious customer. The man smirked and he could feel his cheeks burn. He couldn’t explain why the man interested him.

“Are you even listening to me now, Miura-kun?!” Atsushi jumped a bit from being startled and spoke shakily. “Y-yes, I am. I’m…sorry for causing trouble.” The manager just shook his head as he sighed deeply, and walked away.
Atsushi stood up and noticed that the man was the only one in line.

“I’m very so-”

“Don’t worry about it. We all have our days, don’t we?” He smiled again as he stood there, calmly waiting for the flustered boy to begin checking his items out.
“Yeah, but it’s been like this all day. I’m not really cut out for this job, or any job, really.” Atsushi spoke softly as he was checking out the items in front of him. He couldn’t figure out why he was saying such things to this guy, but he felt like he cared.

“You’ll find something, kid. It takes time, so do your best and something better should come along in time.” The boy nodded in agreement and put the various items in the flimsy, brown, plastic bag for the patron.

As the patron gave him the exact change, he smiled back at the man, and gave him his items. “You know, you’re right. I haven’t thought of it like that. Thanks.” The man nodded in satisfaction. He turned away and was about to leave the small store when Atsushi spoke abruptly.

“I’m Miura. Atsushi Miura.” He could feel himself blush as he gave away his name to the complete stranger.

“I’m Kenichiro Nakajima.” He smiled once again and Atsushi could have sworn the store’s lights shined brighter. “Have a good day, Miura-kun.”

The acquaintance left the store and Atsushi stood at the register in a daze.
“Uh, hello?!” He was brought back to reality when another grumpy customer snapped at him. The boy just smiled.

“I’m sorry sir; I’ll have you out of here in no time.”
Title: Unexpectedly Falling in Love
Rating: MA
Warning: YAOI (boyxboy love). I write lots and lots of lemony yaoi fanfiction, so expect some “graphic” male love. If you don’t like it, then I urge you to not read it.

~~
That’s it for now. I have an outline typed up, so I’m steadily writing it out. There are many more characters that have yet to be debuted, but I’ll get there. I appreciate anyone who is reading this. XD

IT'S IN THIS CATEGORY BECAUSE DA IS NOT TAKING ANY SUBMISSIONS FOR ROMANCE. >.>

~~
I don't really want any constructive criticisms because I'm just writing this for fun, and I know it's not perfect, nor as complete as I'd like it to be.
